The wasps are insects with a body of medium or large size, yellow and black or yellow and brown in color. They live in societies. Societies usually have a one-year life. Females are active in spring after transhumance. They feed on sugary substances such as ripe fruits.

Their stinging is painful and sometimes deadly (allergic shock).
